Passeggiando per Genova, la mia città, ci si imbatterà senza dubbio in numerosi palazzi storici, concentrati principalmente nelle vie centrali e più antiche quali su tutte Via Balbi, via Cairoli e Via Garibaldi.
Questi palazzi sono chiamati “Palazzi dei Rolli” – dove “rolli” significa “ruoli” o “elenchi” – che venivano adibiti per ospitare le personalità politiche e religiose in visita a Genova, durante il periodo dei Dogi (1536-1553) . Anche numerosi viaggiatori illustri , al tempo del Grand Tour, sono stati ospiti nei Palazzi dei Rolli e hanno raccontato la loro esperienza nei loro diari (ad esempio Stendhal).In totale, le dimore incluse nei Palazzi dei Rolli erano 150 e venivano catalogati in base al loro prestigio – secondo il quale venivano poi assegnati ai vari ospiti della Repubblica di Genova. Nell’Archivio di Stato sono presenti ancora i Rolli dove venivano catalogati i Palazzi nobiliari. Il Papa e le cariche più alte potevano essere ospitate solo in un numero ristretto di dimore, situate nell’allora Via Aurea – oggi Via Garibaldi. La varierà degli ospiti era elevata, in quanto la città di Genova – abitata da banchieri, armatori e mercanti – si trasformò ben presto in un crocevia di sovrani, ecclesiastici e diplomatici , noto in tutto il Mediterraneo.
I palazzi sono in stile Barocco e Rinascimentale, all’interno vi sono conservate collezioni di dipinti e le pareti sono affrescate. Tutte le dimore hanno una loggia interna e di norma i proprietari risiedevano al terzo piano, per poter godere della vista sul mare.
Spesso si dice che a Genova gli ospiti non siano trattati bene, ma forse non è del tutto vero!
Le vie che ho citato sopra si trovano nella zona in cui ho sempre abitato, per cui negli anni ho avuto la possibilità di visitarli spesso – specie in occasione dei weekend dedicati all’apertura e alla visita gratuita del Palazzi dei Rolli (Rolli Days 😊 ) .
Ho sfruttato la mia camminata verso l’ufficio per immortalare alcuni di questi Palazzi, cogliendo l’opportunità di mostrarvi una parte della mia città oltre che dei miei viaggi all’estero.

Walking around Genoa, my hometown, you will come across many historic buildings, mainly located in the central and oldest streets such as Via Balbi, Via Cairoli and Via Garibaldi.
These buildings are called "Palazzi dei Rolli" - where "rolli" means "lists" - which were used to host political and religious personalities visiting Genoa, during the Doges' era (1536-1553).
Also many notorious travelers, at the time of the Grand Tour, were guests in the Palazzi dei Rolli and told their experience in their journals (for example Stendhal). The total amount of Palazzi dei Rolli residences was 150 and were cataloged on to their prestige - according to which they were then assigned to the various guests of the Republic of Genoa. In the State Archives there are still the Rolli where the noble palaces were listed. The Pope and the highest offices could only be housed in a limited number of houses, located in the then Via Aurea - now Via Garibaldi.
The variety of guests was high, as the city of Genoa - inhabited by bankers, shipowners and merchants - soon turned into a crossroads of sovereigns, ecclesiastics and diplomats, known throughout the Mediterranean.
The palaces are in Baroque and Renaissance styles, inside them you can find collections of paintings and frescos on the walls . All the residences have an internal loggia and the owners usually resided on the third floor, in order to enjoy the sea view.
It is often said that in Genoa guests are not treated well, but perhaps it is not entirely true!
The streets I mentioned above are in the area where I have always lived, so over the years I have had the opportunity to visit them several times- especially during the free openings weekends (Rolli Days 😊) .
I took the chance of my walk to the office to take pictures of some of these buildings, taking the opportunity to show you a part of my town and not only of my traveling abroad. Moreover, I had the chance to try my new camera!
