GLACIER BAY - into the blue

E’ passato un po’ di tempo dal mio ultimo aggiornamento sulla crociera in Alaska, è giunto il momento di proseguire alla volta del Glacier Bay National Park. Il Parco Riserva della Glacier Bay è situata tra i paralleli 58-60 ed è una delle aree protette e incontaminate più estese del pianeta. Il parco può essere visitato principalmente via mare, tramite battelli, kajak o navi da crociera di piccole dimensioni – come quella su cui ero imbarcata. Tutti i punti del Parco non distano più di 30 miglia dalla costa e i confini si snodano tra Canada (British Columbia) e USA. Il padre scopritore della Glacier Bay è stato William Skinner Cooper, un ecologista e professore universitario che ha studiato dettagliatamente la flora nata nelle aree emerse dal ritiro dei ghiacci. Se navigate attraverso la zona, come nel mio caso, potrete godervi dei panorami mozzafiato e potrete scorgere diverse specie animali in mare e sulla costa. Nello specifico, ho avuto modo di osservare orche, foche, orsi e capre di montagna. Durante la giornata alla Glacier Bay, abbiamo avuto la possibilità di assistere a presentazioni e racconti da una rappresentante della Tribu’ Tinglit – i Nativi che abitano la zona dell’Inside Passage. In questa occasione, abbiamo avuto modo di approfondire la conoscenza di questo Clan e delle loro tradizioni, comprendendo ancora di più il forte legame che esiste ancora tra i Nativi e la loro terra. Se avete in previsione un viaggio on the road in Alaska, con visita alla Glacier Bay, il punto ottimale dove poter sostare, campeggiare ed eventualmente prendere un battello per esplorare la baia è Bartlett Cove. Il campeggio è piuttosto basic, ma non è previsto nessun costo di ammissione. Come avrete intuito, l’attrazione principale di questo luogo è la natura – pertanto il mio suggerimento è di godere appieno di questi paesaggi e del silenzio che regna sovrano tra i ghiacci – senz’altro è utile per staccare dalla frenesia e dal rumore della vita quotidiana. Camilla It’s been a while since I’ve last update you about my cruise to Alaska, now it’s time to go ahead with the journey towards Glacier Bay National Park! Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is located between 58 and 60 degrees north latitude and it is among the largest and most protected wilderness areas on earth. This area can be visited by boat and kajak, in my case the cruise ship was small enough to navigate through the area and its ice-scoured fjords. No point of land or sea is more than 30 miles from a shore and this territory’s borders are located across Canada (British Columbia) and US. The discoverer of Glacier Bay National Park was Mr William Skinner Cooper, an ecologist who studied the flora raised by the retreating glaciers. If you’re cruising, as I did, you have the chance to spot different types of landscapes and animals throughout the trip in this park. I managed to see killer wales and seals at sea, mountain goats and bears on the shore. During the day, we had the chance to meet a representative of the Tinglit community – who got on board of the ship to better explain us what this area means to Natives. This place was the home of her family since decades and actually the descendants of the tribe are still very connected to their land an traditions. This was very interesting, especially in preparation to the visit at Saxman Village in Ketchikan. If you are doing a road trip, you can then stay overnight at Bartlett Cove camping – very primitive but also in the middle of the wilderness of this stunning location. Boats are sailing from Bartlett Cove as well, if you prefer to have a view from the sea. The main attraction of this place is nature, of course. So, my suggestion is surely to enjoy at you best the silence and peace of this remote place – so far from everyday routine and rush.
