KETCHIKAN - End of the Passage

L’ultima tappa della crociera in Alaska è stata la cittadina di Ketchikan, abitata prevalentemente da pescatori e minatori. Ketchikan è altrimenti conosciuta come la porta di accesso al patrimonio naturale dei Fiordi, lo Yosemite del nord per la sua bellezza e maestosità. Una volta sbarcati, ci accoglie l’Arco di Benvenuto, eretto del 1996 a dimostrazione dell’importanza di questo snodo cruciale per il traffico dei crocieristi. Il centro storico della cittadina è riconducibile a Creek Street, una via collocata su palafitte direttamente sul torrente che sfocia nel fiordo. Da qui sono ben visibili i salmoni che lottano contro la corrente per risalire le piccole cascate che il torrente ricrea. Creek Street era un tempo il quartiere a luci rosse della città: come già visto per Skagway, le prostitute ebbero un ruolo di assoluto rilievo nell’economia di queste cittadine all’epoca dei cercatori d’oro. La ragazza più famosa di Ketchikan era Dolly, che gestiva un bordello al numero 24 di Creek Street. Ad oggi, l’edificio appare così com’era all’epoca. All’interno si possono ammirare le diverse tappezzerie, applicate negli anni come da gusto di Dolly, oltre che l’armadio segreto dove la donna nascondeva i liquori di contrabbando negli anni del Proibizionismo. Ai giorni nostri, girando per Creek Street, potrete trovare ristoranti informali e bistrot, oltre che molteplici negozietti di souvenir e specialità locali. Alla fine di Creek Street abbiamo visto anche il magazzino della città, che è uno dei più vecchi edifici commerciali ancora attivo in città. Come anticipato nel post precedente, il clan dei nativi Tlingit è il principale di questo territorio e le loro tradizioni sono strettamente legate ad esso. A dimostrazione di ciò, un totem ritraente il Corvo del Sole è stato eretto nella piazza principale del paese nel 2003, ad opera dell’artista Tlingit Israel Shortridge. Questa è la copia fedele del totem più famoso per questo clan, situato sull’isola di Tongass. Capiamo di trovarci nel cuore della terra Tlingit quando visitiamo il Saxman Village, situato a poche miglia dal centro cittadino. In questo villaggio sono collocati 25 totem, riproduzioni dei totem originari situati nei vecchi villaggi, ora disabitati, in quanto i Nativi si sono spostati nelle grandi città. Il parco è visitabile per conto proprio, ma suggerisco di partecipare all’escursione guidata (costo USD 35 a persona) così da assistere ad uno spettacolo di canti e balli tradizionali, avere la spiegazione sulla storia dei totem principali e poter osservare i carpentieri e falegnami – all’opera nell’intagliare i totem che vengono richiesti loro su commissione. Un’altra escursione valida a Ketchikan è anche lo spettacolo dei falegnami locali, che si sfidano a colpi di accetta sotto gli occhi del gruppo di spettatori. E’ un’attività simpatica da svolgere in gruppo, per immergersi ancora di più nell’atmosfera alaskana. Dopo questa giornata piena a Ketchikan, è tempo per noi di ritornare a bordo della MS Volendam, per l’ultimo giorno di navigazione alla volta di Vancouver. Traendo le somme, posso senz’altro raccomandare questo viaggio a coppie e famiglie di esploratori come noi. Scegliendo il pacchetto crocieristico, siamo riusciti a realizzare il sogno di visitare l’Alaska – sebbene in parte e sebbene di base sia una viaggiatrice “on the road”! La corciera è stata quindi un giusto compromesso per destinazione/prezzo e sono felice di essere andata avanti in questo modo. This town is also known as the gateway to Misty Fjords National Monument, defined "The Yosemite of the North” for its majesty and beauty. Once arrived, the Welcome Arch welcomes you on the ground. Erected in 1996, this symbol is the proof of the importance that Ketchikan has in the cruise passenger traffic. The small town is mainly inhabited by fishermen and the scenic historic center is located above a creek on wooden pilings, and from here you can see salmons struggle back to their native streambed fighting lower falls. Creek Street is namely the most important part of the town, which was a red-light district in the past. As already seen in Skagway, the prostitutes had a central role in the gold-rush times’ economy. The most famous girl in town was Dolly, who handled a brothel at Creek Street 24 – whose appearance looks much like it did during its heyday. Inside the house you can also see special closet in Dolly’s bedroom, where she hided liquor during the Prohibition years. In this street, you can easily find local souvenirs, cozy restaurants and cafes. At the end of the creek, you can see the warehouse - one of Ketchikan's oldest remaining commercial structures. As anticipated in the previous posts, the Native Tlingit Clan is the main of the area and their traditions are strictly close to these land. To remind this, a Sun Raven Pole has been placed in the center of the town by Tlingit artist lsrael Shotridge, in 2003. This is a copy of the original pole standing on Tongass Island. We can easily understand that Ketchikan is a homeplace for Tlingit Tribe, also because one of their villages – Saxman - is located in some minutes distance from Ketchikan. At Saxman Village, we’ve been introduced to the culture of Southeast Alaskan Natives, including the story behind their majestic totem poles. The 25 totems here are the reproductions of original poles that were abandoned at villages when Native Alaskans moved to cities. You can tour the open-air park on your own but I surely recommend to take a guided tour (USD 35 fee needed) so that you can learn more about each pole’s story and attend a very nice show of traditional dances and chores. Attending this kind of tour, you’ll also be able to watch craftsmen at work, usually on poles asked on commission. In my IG gallery you’ll find lots of pics about this experience. Another highlight of the on-shore experience in Ketchikan can also be the Lumberjack show, which can be a very enjoying activity to do in a group – watching lumberjacks’ putting themselves through serious competition and rolling to log everything in between! After this intense day in Ketchikan, it’s time for us to get back on MS Volendam – for our last cruise day back to Vancouver. Bringing things to a close, I can surely recommend this kind of trip to couples and families who have a strong desire of discovery and traveling. Actually, buying a cruise package was the cheapest way to visit Alaska – even though a part of it - and actually have a sight of this remote part of the World. I’m more an “ on the road” kind of traveler, but in this case I compromised for the reasons stated above – and actually I’m satisfied to have done this way! Напомним, что в центре города тлингит художник Израиль Шотридже, в 2003, был помещен полюс воронa Солнца. Это копия оригинального полюса стоя на острове Тонга. Мы можем легко понять, что это родной для тлингит племени, также потому что одна из их деревень-Саксман-находится в нескольких минутах ходьбы от Ketchikan. После этого интенсивного дня в городе, пришло время вернуться на MS Волендам-для нашего последнего дня круиза обратно в Ванкувер. Сделая выводы , я могу уверенно рекомендовать этот вид отключения к парам и семьям, которые имеют сильное желание открытия и путешествовать. На самом деле, круиз пакет был самым дешевем способом посетить Аляску. Я больше "на дороге" вид путешественника, но в этом случае я давольна этим видом пути!
