TALLINN - a Medieval gem of the Baltic 🏰

Ad inizio dicembre, ho avuto la possibilità di visitare Tallinn – la capitale dell’Estonia – per motivi di lavoro. Nonostante fossi impegnata tutto il giorno in ufficio, ho approfittato delle serate a disposizione per visitare il centro della città – non molto esteso e facilmente girabile a piedi. L’impronta medievale della città è ben visibile in ogni sua parte, incominciando dalle mura che ne circoscrivono il centro storico. Procedendo all’interno delle mura, si arriva alla Piazza del Municipio (Raekoja Plats) – il cuore della città vecchia. Al momento della mia visita, la piazza era dimora del mercatino di Natale. Tra i banchetti del mercato ho avuto modo di osservare ed acquistare i prodotti tipici della zona – cenando poi nei numerosi locali che si trovano nelle vie adiacenti. Per un’esperienza culinaria tipica, vi suggerisco il Kuldse Notsu Korts – che propone piatti tipici a prezzi contenuti nel pieno centro storico della città. Passeggiando per le vie ciottolate del centro, si ha modo di capire come l’influenza russa sia ancora vivissima – sia per l’elevata percentuale della popolazione russa o comunque di prima generazione, sia per l’architettura di alcuni degli edifici. Un esempio è la Cattedrale di Alksandr’ Nevskij, costruita nel 1895 per volere dello Zar Alessandro IIII per celebrare il santo omonimo , situata sulla collina della città. All’interno della cattedrale si possono ammirare splendide icone dorate – tipiche della fede ortodossa – oltre che arcate decorate e intarsiate in maniera fastosa. In cima alla cattedrale, si trova un’enorme campana di 15 tonnellate- detta “Blagovesti” (ovvero “portatrice di buone notizie”). Durante la dominazione russa, la collocazione della cattedrale, era stata studiata per rendere ben visibile l’edificio da ogni parte della città. All’uscita della Cattedrale vi troverete davanti al Palazzo del Parlamento, suggestivamente illuminato nelle ore serali. Percorrendo la discesa che riporta verso il centro storico, costeggiando la piccola Fortezza di Vishgorod, vi sentirete immersi nel periodo storico medievale e in un’atmosfera di altri tempi. Ridiscesi a valle, una tappa fondamentale e suggestiva da vedere è senz’altro il Katariina Käik. In questo sobborgo di artisti si possono ritrovare tutt’ora le botteghe degli artigiani e si possono immortalare scorci particolarmente affascinanti. Lungo il Katariina Käik si possono vedere anche delle antiche lapidi riconducibili al convento di Santa Caterina – che ha avuto un ruolo centrale a partire dalla sua fondazione (1246) per l’assistenza ai malati, ai disagiati e nella diffusione della cultura nordica. At the beginning of December, I had the chance to visit Tallinn - the capital of Estonia - for work reasons. Although I was busy all day in the office, I took advantage of the available evenings to visit the city center - not very extended and that can be easily visited on foot. The medieval imprint of the city is clearly visible in all its parts, starting from the walls that surround the historical center. Proceeding inside the walls, we arrive at the Town Hall Square (Raekoja Plats) - the heart of the old city. At the time of my visit, the square was home to the Christmas market. Among the banquets in the market I have been able to observe and buy the typical products of the area – and afterwards having dinner in the numerous places that are located in the adjacent streets. For a typical culinary experience, I suggest the Kuldse Notsu Korts - which offers typical dishes at reasonable prices in the historic center of the city. Walking through the cobblestone streets of the center, we can understand how the Russian influence is still alive - both for the high percentage of the Russian population or in any case of the first generation, and for the architecture of some of the buildings. An example is the Cathedral of Alksandr Nevsky, built in 1895 at the behest of Tsar Alexander IIII to celebrate the saint, located on the hill of the city. Inside the cathedral you can admire beautiful golden icons - typical of the Orthodox faith - as well as decorated and inlaid sumptuous arches. At the top of the cathedral is a huge 15-ton bell called "Blagovesti" (or "bearer of good news"). During the Russian domination, the location of the cathedral had been designed to make the building visible from every part of the city. Going out the Cathedral you will find yourself in front of the Parliament, evocatively lit in the evening hours. Following the descent that leads to the old town, along the small fortress of Vishgorod, you will feel immersed in the medieval period and in an atmosphere of other times. Back down in the valley, the Katariina Käik is certainly a fundamental and suggestive step to see. In this suburb of artists you can still find the artisans' workshops and you can take pics of really fascinating views. Along the Katariina Käik you can also see the ancient tombstones linked to the convent of Saint Catherine’s - which has played a central role since its foundation (1246) for assistance to the sick, the disadvantaged and for the spread of Nordic culture. В начале декабря у меня была возможность посетить Таллинн - столицу Эстонии - по рабочим причинам. Несмотря на то, что я весь день былa занятa в офисе, я воспользовалaся вечерами, доступными для посещения центра города - не очень обширным и легко поворачиваемым пешком. Средневековый отпечаток города хорошо виден во всех его частях, начиная со стен, которые окружают исторический центр. Идя по стенам, вы попадаете на Ратушную площадь (Raekoja Plats) - сердце старого города. Во время моего посещения площадь была домом для рождественской ярмарки. Среди банкетов на рынке я наблюдала и покупала типичные продукты области – затем пошла ужинать в многочисленных местах, которые расположены на соседних улицах. Для типичного кулинарного опыта я предлагаю Kuldse Notsu Korts - который предлагает типичные блюда по разумным ценам в историческом центре города. Прогуливаясь по мощеным улочкам центра, можно понять, как русское влияние все еще очень живо - как для большого процента русского населения или в любом случае первого поколения, так и для архитектуры некоторых зданий. Примером является собор Александра Невского, построенный в 1895 году по велению царя Александра IIII для празднования святого одноименного города, расположенный на холме города. Внутри собора вы можете полюбоваться красивыми золотыми иконами - типичными для православной веры, а также роскошно украшенными и инкрустированными арками. На вершине собора находится огромный 15-тонный колокол под названием «Благовести» (или «Носитель хороших новостей»). Во времена русского господства расположение собора было спроектировано так, чтобы здание было видно из любой части города. На выходе из собора вы окажетесь перед Парламента, вызывающе освещенным в вечерние часы. После спуска, ведущего к старому городу, вдоль небольшой крепости Вишгород, вы почувствуете себя погруженным в средневековый период и в атмосферу других времен. Вернувшись в долину, Katariina Käik, безусловно, является фундаментальным и наводящим на размышления шагом. В этом пригороде художников вы все еще можете найти ремесленные мастерские и увековечить особенно захватывающие виды. Вдоль Katariina Käik вы также можете увидеть древние надгробия, относящиеся к монастырю Санта-Катерина, который с момента своего основания (1246 г.) играл центральную роль в оказании помощи больным, обездоленным и распространению скандинавской культуры.
